There is no magic to networking online. All the rules in the real world still apply, to engage, be generous, and behave well. But online networking platforms give you reach and efficiency that can be very valuable.
So it’s important to consider your goals and build the right networking plan to support your success both online and offline.

Your Brand, Your Content and Your Profiles
It’s very important to be someone specific out there. Be clear about your brand. Create compelling summaries to describe yourself and your work to use as profiles on social media sites and other online profiles.

Look through twitter and LinkedIn. Look at a lot of photos and profiles. Decide what works. Decide what you like. Decide what gives you a bad impression.
Use those ideas to choose a photo and create a profile that reflects your brand. I recommend using a professional quality photo online.
Create your profiles with a lot of care. It matters.
Should I be one person or two?
Many people worry about combining their work and personal profiles. I talked about the upsides and downsides of each approach. It depends on your desired outcome, your work environment and your personality.
It’s always easier to maintain one brand. And I have found that it’s easier to engage work colleagues with interesting non-work updates than it is to only ever be talking about work with them!
In the webinar we talked about how to make this choice.
Ongoing execution
Once you meet a new person, that relationship only has value if you stay in touch. Many people find this part difficult and unnatural.
In this webinar, Networking Online and Offline, we talked a lot about execution. I provided several ideas and tools to help you get your networking activities onto your calendar so that you do it!
Consistent execution is another place where social media can provide a big payoff for your efforts as you can connect with a large number of people in a very short amount of time. It’s easier too because you can simply respond to what they are broadcasting they are interested about in the moment. You don’t need to figure out what to say!

Build your network with people based on things you actually are interested in and care about. It’s not about collecting business cards it’s about make new friends genuinely.

- Give (all the time) and before you need anything
- Give more than you take
