Career Development is one of those things that often gets a lot more talk than action.
It typically is a very highly ranked “want” on employee surveys.
As a manager, Career Development is tough to provide for a few reasons:
- Everyone is different, and every employee has different capabilities and goals
- When you are super-busy moving the business forward, it can be tough to spend time on
- It’s hard to figure out what to do!

My approach to career development is pretty simple. And it solves all these problems.
- Career Development needs to be owned, defined and driven by the individual
- The crux of career development is to gain learning and experience in the job you aspire to before you get there.
- The role of the manager it to provide support and air-cover to help the employee get that experience (once the employee identifies it).

What employees need to develop, in addition to getting the right experience, is a combination of:
- Strategic and big-picture thinking
- Communication skills
- Executive Presence
- Time management and delegating skills
- Ability to lead and act during uncertainty
- Skills to build a capable motivated team
- Stronger professional network & sponsorship
