This Week: Chaos Doesn’t Scale

In the section of MOVE (V = Valor) I talk about the things that require real courage as a leader if you want to get your strategic initiative to stick. There are many.

Today, I want to talk about Scaling

The biggest challenge to scaling is being too busy. I often tell CEO’s:

You are too busy being a $200M company to be a $1B company. You can’t get there if you stay this busy being a $200M company.

One of the biggest tests of Valor is the willingness to say NO to things that are keeping your company too busy, so that you can focus on your winning product lines and build the necessary infrastructure to scale.

The companies that scale are the ones who choose to do fewer things

That might sound a little counter intuitive, but the companies who scale, are the ones who do less. It works because they can do those few things really well. By comparison, the companies who get stuck, often get stuck because they keep trying to do too many things.

You realistically can’t do *too many* things well.

The Valor to say NO

As a leader it’s vitally important to develop your confidence in this area. Study successful companies. Every chance you get, talk to CEO’s of companies who scaled and ask them, “Did you ever have a scary decision where you had to abandon some revenue streams or opportunities in order to focus on wining in fewer markets?”

They will always say yes. Because: Chaos doesn’t scale.
